Firm History

Founded in 1983 by Charles and Ted Gill, Gill Capital Partners has been reinvented through the vision and commitment of current principals James O’Brien and John Winslow.

Formerly known as Gill & Associates, the company got its start in 1983 under the direction and leadership of Charles Gill. Filled with entrepreneurial spirit after more than 25 years working as a broker in the downtown Denver offices of Boettcher and Company, Gill decided to open his own business.

Less than a year later, Gill & Associates entered into an investment advisory relationship with the Independent State Bank of Colorado (ISBC), a banker’s bank formed by eighty-five of the state’s independent banks. Through ISBC, Gill & Associates managed bank portfolios with combined assets over $500 million — their foray into what’s now known as Institutional Services. In May 1991, the company parted ways with ISBC, but today remains active with the Independent Bankers of Colorado. Colorado community banks have grown accustomed to Gill & Associates’ unparalleled service.

In 1988, under the leadership of Charles’ son, Ted Gill, Gill & Associates formed and became the Investment Advisor/Administrator for CSAFE, a local government investment pool for Colorado government entities. The highly regarded Standard and Poor’s fund profile cited CSAFE’s “credit quality, market price exposure and management, together with its conservative investment practices and strict external controls”, as the basis for issuing its rating of AAAm. Gill & Associates managed this trust for 12 years before the management contract was sold in 2000.

Ted Gill retired in 2004, having sold the firm to James O’Brien and John Winslow of O’Brien Capital Management, a wealth management company. In December 2005, Gill & Associates and O’Brien Capital Management formally merged to become Gill Capital Partners, Inc.
